Now before I start this I am speaking only from my perspective. I say this because NOW everything has to be “politically correct” but I am going to be correct from my stance.
These thoughts started on Friday as I was speaking to an older gentleman at work, one who has a solid foundation of faith and a greater understanding of the reason for “Christ-mas”. This year our company decided not to put up a Christmas Tree and instead of signing our cards with Merry Christmas it was Happy Holidays. In listening to him he said some things that hit home not only for me but maybe for you too. He said when did things become so different that we no longer put up the tree in celebration of Jesus’ birth. He said when I was growing up we honored that of different backgrounds and respected them all. If you knew they were Jewish you said Happy Hanukkah, they respectively in return said Merry Christmas. He said it gave us an opportunity to ask someone who celebrated differently how they celebrated, what was part of their family traditions and we openly spoke of mine which is Catholic. It gave us the opportunity to welcome that people celebrated differently but still celebrated God in one way or another. I myself from my own situations have gotten to know and understand people of different faith just by knowing and asking. Not that I can change the way our world is but we have taken so much away from what this HOLIDAY is suppose to be about. We put so much more emphasize on Santa and what all the NEW toys and technologies are that he can bring we forget to tell the glory of the miracles and joy in Jesus’ birth. See there still can be the glory in Santa but tell the magical story of Jesus as both carry that mystery and wonder with in.
As stated my mother was a Catholic woman and raised us all in a good solid foundation of faith. Christmas had the excitement of Santa but its most important was the story of Jesus. The story in itself is magical the virgin Mary who was delivering the son of God, the son who was going to change the world “our world”. The story and magical behind the 3 kings who were wealthy, educated men who studied astrology and noticed a new star which meant a son of a king was being born. They followed that star (that star that when I was a kid since I knew the story always looked up to see if I could find it) to Jerusalem to ask the village of this son. When they were told there was no son the king being born they looked to notice the star had moved and stood over the manger where Jesus lay. And the story of the shepherds who were poor, outcasts and manned the sheep all day that the angel came to & told them to go find the new messiah, the son of god. See 2 very different cultures were drawn together no differences mattered here…it was for one reason JESUS.
I sit and listen to my closest family & friends this holiday season and all hear is about gifts and it makes me sad. This year for me Christmas has a new meaning and it starts with JESUS and it ends with me understanding that it is so much more than gifts but the glory of family, joy and thanks. As stated previously just my perspective maybe something that can change yours.
